Of all the jobs you could choose, teaching is one of the most challenging and rewarding. It takes a certain type of person to make a good teacher - caring, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely interested in students of all ages. And with many states declaring a teacher shortage every year, teacher jobs aren't hard to find. Here's what you need to know about teaching.

Teachers usually must be certified. You don't just wake up one day and decide to teach - teacher jobs usually require a college degree and the completion of an accredited teacher certification program. Every state has different requirements, so you will need to check with your state board of education.

Public schools and private schools have different standards. Decide now whether you want to find teaching jobs in public schools (which receive taxpayer funding and are required by law to admit any student) or private schools (which are privately funded and selective in student admissions). Depending on the leadership, private schools may be more or less strict about required certifications and education.

Good teachers love to learn new things. From fresh techniques for handling that difficult student, to the latest in scientific progress - good teachers always have their eyes and ears open to new information that will enhance their classroom. They are constantly searching for resources, going beyond the curriculum to enliven course material.

Teachers need support. Few teaching jobs are easy, and teaching in isolation can be a nightmare. New teachers in particular should seek support from a variety of sources, including other teachers, online networks, and supportive parent-teacher associations.

Teachers can change the world. When done well, teaching jobs aren't just about the paycheck. Teachers have the power to shape every person who enters their classroom, either instilling a love for learning and the confidence to achieve, or tearing down confidence and self-esteem. Your students will go on to become fathers, mothers, administrators, politicians, doctors, lawyers, writers, and who knows what else? Besides parents, teachers have the most powerful job in the world. In your future teaching jobs, use that power wisely.
